[SOLUTION] Outlook 2000 opens, then closes; won’t stay open!
My Outlook 2000 would not stay open today! I would open it, but it would immediately disappear and close. Each time I open it, it keeps closing. I found the reason, which is iTunes 10, and the solution which did work for me:
iTunes will sync with Microsoft Outlook 2003, Microsoft Outlook 2007, or Microsoft Outlook 2010. If you use Microsoft Outlook 2000, you can resolve this issue by renaming the “OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn.dll” file. This file can be renamed however you choose, and is found in the following default location depending on your operating system:
* Windows XP, Windows Vista (32-bit) or Windows 7 (32-bit):
o C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn.dll
* Windows Vista (64-bit) or Windows 7 (64-bit):
o C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn.dll
If you install Microsoft Outlook 2003, Microsoft Outlook 2007, or Microsoft Outlook 2010 after renaming this file, you may need to reinstall iTunes 10 before being able to sync Contacts, Calendars, email account information, or Notes.
I renamed it OutlookChangeNotifierAddIn – problem file.dll
For those of you having difficulty finding the file, find a find to get to the C: drive. For Windows XP, it is My Computer. For Vista or Windows 7, look for “Computer”. Once you find C: and double-click it, double-click the Program Files folder (for 32-bit systems), and so on, following the paths listed above. Searching for the file will probably be tough to make work.

[UPDATE 10/1/10] I just updated to iTunes 10.0.1 and it happened all over again! The fix worked again…
Worked like a champ. Tried various fixes to include repairing/clean install and your fix was the cure. Thanks, Don
I just tried a few things (like repairing office) and this is the only thing that worked. Apple stinks.
Thanks again.
I had this same problem and this worked like a CHAMP!!
Thank you thank you!

GREAT solution, immediate fix !!!
Worked for me after trying everything else (repair, system restore) Congratulations on a neat solution. How did you dig it out?? Much respect!
Just some persistent Google searching.
Awsome.
I had tried everything else.
You rock.
Thanks,
I’ve spent three days trying to get a fix. I’ve uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted, added, googled, screamed, shouted, practically wept and here it is, a simple rename this file solution!
Thank you so, so, much.
Cheers.
Well done Mr Karting.
This worked a treat.
6 hours trying to solve this.
Are you kidding me! Worked like a charm! I called Apple Tech Support and they had no clue…LOSERS!! You made my day. Thanks.
This made my day.. f’n iTunes.
OMG you are the MAN!!! 4 days of torture w/ this computer. Almost used it as a boat anchor — Yipee!!! Hours and hours spent googling this and here you are… You are on the fav. list now… thank you thank you thank you for posting this.

Thanks a ton! That worked. I should have realized I just installed iTunes 10 and then Outlook stopped working.
Hi Folks
A brilliant post. Same problem
Like others I have tried everything else
and had a suspision it was after iTunes updated.
Will go away and try the fix-fingers crossed
I’m so glad I found this because I was having the same problem. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much. This was driving mr up the wall. How typical of Apple to assume that everyone can afford to update a programme that is working perfectly and only address new versions.
Thank you so much. I had this problem before with a different itunes version and despite my requests to my son not to upgrade he just did to 10. I thank you so much for this. I need access to my e-mail account.
Andy, I appreciate this so much – I tried to download itunes and it started to make me crazy so I bailed – forgot all about it until today. Reinstalled office, etc. How very cool that you wrote this, thank you! I would have been thrashing around for weeks!
C.
I have been going out of my mind with this! Thank you so much!
This support issue was driving me insane!
Finally found your solution, remoted in to the customer’s computer, changed the filename and boom Outlook opens!
Thank you very much.
That’s a bingo!
This was great! Thank you as this was driving the user nuts and in a couple of seconds of searching and applying this fix… it now works.
Thanks Again.
thanks a Brazilian
Perfect….Thank you very much!!!
Thanks much. Your solution was spot on. I will pass this on to a friend who is having the same problem. Thanks again…
Thanks! Worked great. You rule!
you are the best!!!
Cheers.
I don’t know how you figured this out…but it worked for me too!!!! Thanks for sharing. iTunes is the most un-user friendly program I have ever encountered 🙁
Thanks again!
Thanks, I’ve been working on this one for a week…tried many other solutions but this one actually WORKED!!! Thanks again.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I know that Itunes crewed up Outlook but did not know how to fix. Your fix worked.
You rock–in desperation, I downloaded Thunderbird so I could continue functioning–I may stay with it but thanks so much.
Terrific!!!! I had the same problem on my boss’s computer and this solved it. Thanks
Brillant fix, Thanks.
Thank you very much!!! That solution worked for me too!!!!
Once renammed Outlook stay open and my bosses messages were received by Outlook!
Thank you
Guillaume
Thanks a mill, pity Apple can’t publish this on their site
Tried all the other fixes, but nothing worked. Yours worked like a charm. How do you figure these problems out anyway? (Rhetorical question) – Not that I would understand it anyway. Thanks
Another big Thank you,
We need to make this appear in other forums so people can find it easier. Hope you don’t mind if I copy it around a bit, will give you the credits! Thanks again
Please share! I posted this to help others.
Thanks for the solution. I had this problem and couldn’t figure it out. I happened right after I was troubleshooting another issue and saw the itunes relationship and remembered I had just updated itunes.
Thanks again.
dude – how did you know this?? 4 hours of pain and suffering. I tried fixes, scans, repairs and on and on.
I wish I found this site sooner!!
Thanks, this was a real lifesaver after pulling my hair out for a day or two.
This worked for me, too! It’s such a simple fix after I’d tried many other suggestions.
Thank you!
Thank you! I was lost without my calendar and restored it just in time to get to an appointment I had forgotten about.
I’m not very computer savvy. If I do a search for this file (OutlookChange etc) the search companion will locate it and list it. Can the file be opened from that source and simply be renamed there and be done?
Thanks, Tom
Give it a try and find out!
Thank you so much. Would never have figured that out by myself. Worked fantastic, hardest thing was finding the file to rename.
thanks a million
thanks, you’re a star 🙂
Linda. So how did you find the file. I’m having the same problem.
From the bottom of my heart, I THANK YOU!!! I thought the problem was with my Outlook and tried every fix I could find. I had no clue that iTunes was the problem. Thank you SO SO much for such an easy fix. Bless you!! I’ve wasted so much time trying to get my Outlook to stay open.
